What are Carrier Oils ?
The Quiet Healers of Aromatherapy
When you begin working with essential oils, you may naturally be drawn to their aroma and potency. But there is something equally important working alongside them, something quieter yet just as essential. These are carrier oils. Think of carrier oils as the gentle support system for essential oils.
While essential oils are highly concentrated, carrier oils help deliver them safely into the skin, allowing their benefits to unfold in a balanced and comfortable way.
They are derived from seeds, nuts, and fruits, and are rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids, and skin nourishing compounds. Unlike essential oils, they do not evaporate quickly and usually have a soft and neutral aroma, which makes them ideal for blending.
At Kundalini Aroma, many of our carrier oils are grown and pressed on our own organic farms, while others are carefully sourced from trusted growers who share our values. Each oil remains pure and unrefined, carrying its natural colour, aroma, and full spectrum of nutrients.
What Do Carrier Oils Do for You ?
You might be surprised to know that carrier oils are not just a base. They actively care for your skin in their own unique way. When used on their own, they help hydrate, soften, and restore your skin’s natural balance. Because their composition is similar to the skin’s own natural oils, they absorb easily and support the skin barrier without clogging or overwhelming it. Each carrier oil brings its own cosmetic benefits.
Light oils such as Jojoba and Grapeseed help balance oil production, making them ideal for both oily and acne prone skin. They absorb quickly and leave a smooth, non greasy finish.
Nourishing oils like Sweet Almond and Apricot Kernel soften the skin, improve texture, and enhance natural radiance. They are gentle and suitable for regular skincare routines.
Richer oils such as Avocado and Hemp Seed deeply condition and support dry or mature skin. They help improve elasticity and provide long lasting hydration.
Some oils, like Rosehip, are valued for their ability to support skin repair, improve the appearance of scars, and promote a more even complexion.
When you blend carrier oils with essential oils, they do more than just dilute. They help the essential oils spread evenly, improve absorption, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the blend. This makes them ideal for massage, facial care, body oils, and hair treatments.
Over time, you may begin to notice how your skin responds to different oils. That is where the real beauty lies, in choosing what feels right for you and allowing your skincare to become a more personal and intuitive experience.
Choosing the Right Oil for You
Not all carrier oils feel the same, and this is where it becomes personal.
Some oils, like Jojoba or Grapeseed, are light and absorb quickly, making them ideal for facial care or lighter applications. Others, like Almond or Avocado, are richer and more deeply nourishing, especially for dry or mature skin.
You may find yourself naturally drawn to certain textures and qualities. Over time, you will begin to understand what your skin responds to best. You can even blend different carrier oils together to create something that feels just right for you.
A Few Simple Things to Keep in Mind
Since carrier oils are natural and rich in nutrients, they do have a shelf life. Most carrier oils remain fresh for up to a year, while some, such as Jojoba oil which is actually a liquid wax, are far more stable and can last for over three years when stored properly.
To keep them at their best, store them in a cool and dark place and always keep the bottle tightly closed. This helps preserve their freshness and effectiveness.
It is also important to use only true plant based oils as carriers. Products like mineral oil or petroleum based substances may seem similar, but they do not offer the same nourishment or compatibility with the skin.
More Than Just a Base
As you continue your journey with aromatherapy, you may begin to see carrier oils differently.
They are not just there to dilute. They are there to support, to nourish, and to create balance. They ground the intensity of essential oils and allow their therapeutic qualities to work gently and deeply.
In many ways, they are the Earth’s nurturing touch, steady, supportive, and quietly transformative.
At Kundalini Aroma, we honour carrier oils as an essential part of this experience, helping you connect with plant wisdom in a way that feels safe, natural, and deeply caring.
